"Make Room", a song for our CityPoint Value - Be Authentic

As I said in the previous post, this past Sunday Nick preached over our 3rd Church Value - Be Authentic from James 5:16. This type of authenticity is not about being "real" in a negative sense of defiantly holding our sin up in an air of pride, but by humbly pointing out our sin and struggles and seeking hope and rest in the only One who can possibly completely provide it: Jesus Christ.

Bottom Line: Authenticity requires honesty, grace, and love, understanding the goal is to help each other become like Jesus.

On Sunday, Keeva led us in the song Make Room, which is a simple worship song about laying down any sin or distraction that would hinder us from running our race well and growing in Christ-likeness. We need to make room for the Holy Spirit to do that work in us, which is an essential part to an individual's spiritual walk. God wants to make us more like His Son, and He does that through our interactions with Him and with His people, the church, through our individual discipleship, our small groups and accountability relationships, and our large group gatherings. They all serve necessary aspects in our personal spiritual walks, and all are opportunities to individually and corporately lay our burdens upon Jesus.

At the risk of copy/pasting entire books of the Bible to drive home that point here's several passages that call us to turn to Jesus, lay our burdens on Him, and make room for the Spirit to work.

'In the same way, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. All of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your cares on him, because he cares about you.'
1 Peter 5:5-7

'Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every hindrance and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. For the joy that lay before him, he endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.'
Hebrews 12:1-2

'“Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take up my yoke and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”'
Matthew 11:28-30

Make Room by Community Music

Here is where I lay it down
Every burden every crown
This is my surrender
This is my surrender
Here is where I lay it down
Every lie and every doubt
This is my surrender

And I’ll make room for you
To do whatever you want to
Do whatever you want to

Shake up the ground of all my tradition
Breakdown the walls of all my religion
Your way is better
Your way is better

Here is where I lay it down
You are all I’m chasing now
This is my surrender
