The Word of the Lord Endures Forever - Monday Devo
All flesh is as grass,
And all the glory of man as the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
And its flower falls away,
But the word of the Lord endures forever.
1 Peter 1:24-25 referencing back to Isaiah 40:6-8
Everything in this life is temporary except one thing. Everything we have to gain in this life is nothing except one thing. Everything we desire to obtain in this life is futile except one thing. That one thing is the Word of the Lord. God’s Word is everlasting. It does not change and will endure forever. We oftentimes correlate the Word of the Lord as the written word, ie the Bible. This is 100% true. God has given us His Word in the form of our text that is true, right and living. Everything in this world should be challenged against Scripture. This is the only way we know for sure if something is true or right. One warning we always have is against deception and what 2 Timothy 4:3 describes: “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance with their own desires.” We cannot teach or desire to be taught doctrine that makes us feel good compared to doctrine which is true, right and living. I believe this time that 2 Timothy talks about is our current times, so we must endure sound doctrine.
We live in a world, and specifically our American society, that desires for more and more things. It can be tangible items that can come at a finger swipe from Amazon. It can be promotions. It can be a dollar figure for our wages. It can be our bottom line of what we are trying to achieve for retirement income. All these things are as grass and wither. They are not eternal. They can be taken away in a moment. Are we preparing for eternity, or are we preparing for our current desires? This doesn’t mean we cannot have desires and enjoy provisions in this life. It goes back to the heart condition as Jesus taught in Matthew that we have been studying on Sundays and in Life Groups. What is our heart condition? Are we holding all with open hands to use for His glory? Are we good stewards with that which He has entrusted to us? These are challenging questions that must be considered daily.
Another note on the Word of the Lord. Consider the opening John: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God (John 1:1). Jesus is our Word. Everything is nothing without Jesus. All the Bible points us to Jesus. We must have a sacrifice to cover for sins. We must have a Savior to redeem us. If we do not acknowledge we are a sinner, believe in Jesus, and confess our sins, we are literally lost to everything that withers and falls away.
Let us store up for ourselves treasures in heaven for the hour is late!
MARANATHA!
