Worship Song - Homecoming - Bethel Music

Sin and confession are not as common of topics as they should be in worship songs, considering how important and integral to orthodox Christian faith repentance is. The theological reality is we have all sinned and fall short of God’s glory and His standards for righteousness, and the wages of sin is death, but as we especially celebrate during Easter, the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus who died for our sins, was buried, and raised on the third day (Romans 3:23, 6:23, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4). All of this is integral to orthodox faith, and was necessary because of our sin, so confessing sin and repenting is a biblical part of our faith.

So what is sin? Human activity that is contrary to God’s will. We’ve looked at the idea of God’s will a lot lately in our Matthew series on topics like the Lord’s Prayer (and bending the knee to His will). With that in mind, what then is confession? An admission or acknowledgment of sin. A declaration or profession of belief. May also indicate an admission of sin to another believer. “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.” James 5:16. In the Old Testament, public confession was a regular part of corporate worship, and in the early church the practice of publicly confessing sins was common. Generally, confession as an admission of sin is a precondition to forgiveness and salvation. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 [LBD]

This is why we are excited to add “Homecoming” into our song rotation. We introduced it last Sunday and will sing it together again on Easter Sunday. Look over some of the lyrics below that show a heart of confession of sin, and listen to the song as part of your personal worship this week, and join us this Easter Sunday as we celebrate Jesus’ sacrifice and victory over sin and death.

VERSE 1
Lord I confess that I’ve been a criminal
I’ve stolen your breath and sang my own song
And Lord I confess that I’m far from innocent
These shackles I wear I bought on my own

CHORUS
Scarlet sins had a crimson cost
You nailed my debt to that old rugged cross
An empty slate, at the empty grave
Thank God that stone was rolled (away)

VERSE 2
Lord I confess I’ve been the prodigal
Made for Your house but walked my own roads
Then Jesus came and tore down my prison walls
Death came to life when He called me by name
